Rulis’ International Kitchen – El Paso, Texas

Like me, you may have driven past the strip mall at 2900 North Mesa 100 times without stopping to check out the unassuming Rulis’ International Kitchen. When I finally stopped in for lunch a month ago, I really kicked myself that it had taken me SO long to discover what Rulis’ had to offer. True to their tagline of “just another gourmet dive,” Rulis’ offers up an eclectic menu of tapas, sandwiches, salads and entrees from a variety of world cuisines in a laid back, contemporary environment appropriate for the UTEP neighborhood in which it perches.

When I returned to Rulis’ for a dinner with friends a few weeks after that eye opening lunch, I came for the fresh ingredients that successfully liven up somewhat standard dishes. The same fresh mango that transformed the Blue Crab Wontons into something lush and juicy did the same trick for the otherwise predictable Shrimp Tacos I tried at dinner. The fresh squid used in the Calamari Steak appetizer may have made it the city’s best calamari dish (though I do love Tabla’s sweet and spicy tempura version). You also cannot go wrong with one of the meat/cheese appetizers like the baked brie or manchego and prosciutto bites paired up with a nice wine. If I haven’t convinced you already, stop by Rulis’ for happy hour from 4-7 daily or one of their weekly specials like Steakhouse Monday (Rib Eye, soup or salad, and 3 sides for $15), Tapas Tuesday (BOGO Tapas), or Wino Wednesday (50% off wine bottles) and maybe we’ll bump into you while we’re chowing down on some of those delicious Crab Wontons. My only complaint? Their website is a bit outdated and difficult to navigate or to find a comprehensive menu…hopefully an update is in the works!

Wow! I’ve never seen this place before, but you had me convinced at crab wonton nachos. Yes please!

My husband and I moved to El Paso two months ago, and we are having fun exploring the restaurants. We are originally from Dallas and big Tex-Mex fans, so the food here is right up our alley. Love your blog and all the great places I’m discovering through it!

    • Amy – thank you for using the site! It makes us happy to hear from our readers. If you like our Facebook page we are always posting more up to date events and new restaurant openings (http://www.facebook.com/goodbaduglyeats). When you go to Rulis’ definitely give those wontons a try!
