“Motorino” – East Village, NYC

Chef Mathieu Palombino’s East Village Pizzeria “Motorino” has been lauded by critics as “the city’s best pizza” (Sam Sifton of the New York Times) and has won “Best Whole Pie in NYC” (Serious Eats 2009 People’s Choice Awards) and “Best New Pizza Joints in the City” (New York Magazine), so when Alex and I set out for a pie during our whirlwind visit to NYC a few weeks ago, it seemed like the obvious option to satisfy our fix. Perhaps I should not have read all of those rave reviews before sampling for myself; based on the lavish praise I was anticipating some sort of miracle pizza. While the traditional Neopolitan Margherita Pie, with fresh mozzarella di bufala, basil and EVOO, was undoubtedly delicious, I am not quite sure just what elevates this pie over the city’s other well-known brick oven pizzeries. The crust, perfectly chewy and soft inside, flaky and bubbled outside, was indeed a treat, but so is the crust at Brooklyn’s Grimaldi’s and (call me crazy) even El Paso’s own “Crust.” Well, maybe this perplexing question of just what makes Motorino best is a perfect excuse to keep eating pizza researching 😉
