“Crave” – El Paso, Texas

Whenever someone comes to visit us in El Paso or is new to the area, Crave is the first place I recommend. Crave was recently rated “Best Sure-Bet for Good Food (every time)”, “Best Breakfast”, “Best Burger”, “Best Catering” AND “Best Service” in El Paso’s 2012 Best of the Best competition, and for good reason! Crave serves up traditional comfort food with a modern twist and an “El Paso” flair and they do it very well.  They have taken diner staples like french toast, burgers, and macaroni and cheese and turned out enticing varieties like Cajeta Stuffed French Toast, the Whole Hog Burger with bacon, ham, chorizo, asadero and guacamole, and their keeps-you-coming-back-for-more Green Chili Mac and Cheese. The atmosphere is upbeat, quirky and welcoming but count on a crowd and possibly a lengthy wait. I typically go for brunch on the weekend (take advantage of their $1 mimosas after noon on Sunday!), but they offer a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu all week as well.

Although I noticed in my last few visits that the typically sharp, friendly and reliable service and consistently well prepared food has wavered slightly (my macaroni was runny, server was curt…), I have confidence that Crave will continue to be a go-to El Paso eatery for many years to come. The West Side location is a bit cramped with limited seating, and if you go on for weekend brunch you are guaranteed a 20-40 minute wait, but be patient, it’s worth it. The smaller the group the quicker the seating, so take your best friend, skip the line, and snag two seats at the bar. The East Side location is larger and has a full bar. I highly recommend starting your meal off with the Tuna Ceviche, you’ll wish you had two orders. Their burgers are arguably the best in the city, so try the Chile Bomber or Black and Blue Burger with a side of their killer Green Chili Mac or Sweet Potato Fries with Marshmallow Dipping Sauce. If by then you manage to still have an appetite, finish it off with the too-good Barely Baked Cookie, voted El Paso’s best desert. Leave a comment and let us know what YOU think of Crave!
